Pa. woman gets probation for fake cancer claims (AP)

WASHINGTON, Pa. ? A Pennsylvania woman who submitted nearly $100,000 worth of fake cancer treatment insurance claims for herself and her husband must repay the money while she serves nearly nine years on probation.

The Observer-Reporter of Washington, Pa. ( http://bit.ly/AjMmL4) says 52-year-old Deborah Brown, of North Strabane, was sentenced Tuesday by a Washington County judge.

Brown pleaded guilty in August to submitting the phony claims from August 2006 through May 2008.

Brown's husband really did have prostate cancer, but didn't receive any of the treatments Brown claimed after surgery cured him in November 2006. Brown was diagnosed with lipoma, a noncancerous condition in 2007, but submitted 29 false claims for liposarcoma ? a cancerous condition that affects fatty tissue.

Brown says she's addicted to painkillers but sobered up since her arrest last year and is remorseful.

Durant's shot lifts Thunder past Warriors 119-116 (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Kevin Durant came hard off the screen, took the pass and launched a jumper that banked off the glass and through the net.

In a season already filled with late-game highlights and game-winning shots, Durant can't miss even when he's off the mark. The same might go for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It's no surprise both are among the NBA's best.

Durant made the go-ahead bank shot with 14.2 seconds remaining and the league-leading Thunder overcame career performances by Monta Ellis and David Lee to beat the Golden State Warriors 119-116 on Tuesday night.

"It's one of those things where you shoot it and you're like, `Aw, that's a terrible shot,'" Durant said. "When it went in, I was kind of surprised."

He might've been the only one.

Durant finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Russell Westbrook added 31 points and seven assists to give Oklahoma City its fourth win in five games. After rallying for a thrilling comeback at Portland a night earlier, the Thunder had to sweat out another frantic finish.

Ellis scored a career-high 48 points, and Lee had 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double. Ellis and Brandon Rush both missed 3-pointers in the closing seconds to tie or take the lead.

The Warriors had every opportunity for a stunning upset.

Ellis pulled up just outside the paint and floated a runner while getting fouled by Westbrook, bringing the announced crowd of 17,971 to its feet. He completed the three-point play to give Golden State a 112-108 lead with 3:53 remaining.

Daequan Cook followed with a 3-pointer, Westbrook hit a long jumper and Durant had a powerful two-hand slam to put Oklahoma City back in front 115-112 in an instant.

After Dorell Wright made one of two free throws to get Golden State within two, Durant missed a contested 3-pointer. The ball found Ellis' hands and the guard never gave it back.

Ellis darted to the basket off a pick-and-roll with Lee, threw his body into center Serge Ibaka and shielded the ball for a right-handed layup that started another three-point play that gave Golden State a 116-115 lead with 22.3 seconds to play.

Then, Durant simply showed his best.

After missing a finger roll through a crowd of defenders, Durant got a second chance when the ball trickled out of bounds off Golden State. He didn't take long to redeem himself, coming off a screen and banking in an 18-footer with 14.2 seconds left.

Ellis missed a 3-pointer on the other end, Westbrook followed with two free throws and Golden State had one last chance to send it to overtime. But Ellis inbounded the ball on the final play, and Rush missed a 3-pointer in the corner at the final buzzer.

"We have to break that cycle," Ellis said. "The games we should win, we've got to start winning. And the games like this, we should go out and compete and give ourselves a chance to win."

Ellis finished 18 for 29 from the field and was 9 of 10 on free throws. He also had seven rebounds and two assists.

"You want me to tell him stop shooting? The guy went for 48 tonight," said Warriors coach Mark Jackson.

The West Coast swing of the Thunder's long road stretch came full circle.

A trip that began with a 120-109 victory at Golden State on Jan. 27 hit one of its more difficult stretches. After a 111-107 comeback victory in overtime a night earlier at Portland, Oklahoma City struggled early to find its rhythm.

The Warriors sprinted to an 8-0 lead in the first 1:58 of the game with Ellis setting the tone. The Warriors dynamic shooting guard started the game 8 for 10 from the floor and often finished in acrobatic fashion.

Oklahoma City clamped down on defense ? if only for a moment ? to overpower Golden State, which shot 66.7 percent in the opening quarter. Durant stole an off-balance pass from Ellis and handed off to James Harden for a layup to highlight an 11-3 run that put the Thunder ahead 53-43 late in the second.

The break did little to slow Golden State's undersized shooting guard.

Ellis slipped through screens and past every defender the Thunder threw his way, igniting a fast-pace push to the second half. He started a three-point play with a scintillating layup over Westbrook and Wright also hit a 3-pointer to highlight a run that put the Warriors in front 80-68 in the third quarter.

"We have to break that cycle" Ellis said. "The games we should win, we've got to start winning. And the games like this, we should go out and compete and give ourselves a chance to win."

"Our goal going into the game is to hold Monta Ellis to 50 and he only had 48 so we accomplished two things," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said, sarcastically. "We got the win and we kept him under 50. It was a great performance by him, but we did get some stops at the end of the game and we needed it."

Notes: Lee's previous triple-double came with the Knicks at Golden State on April 2, 2010, when he had 37 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists with the Knicks. ... Ellis had scored 46 points twice previously. ... Oklahoma City swingman Thabo Sefalosha sat out his sixth straight game with a sore right foot.

Satellite tracking reveals sea turtle feeding hotspots

ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2012) ? Satellite tracking of threatened loggerhead sea turtles has revealed two previously unknown feeding 'hotspots' in the Gulf of Mexico that are providing important habitat for at least three separate populations of the turtles, according to a study published recently in the journal Biological Conservation.

The two sites, located in the open waters off the coast of Southwest Florida and the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, were found by a team of scientists when they compiled and analyzed loggerhead tracking data.

The researchers' goal was to synthesize tracking data from three genetically distinct loggerhead populations to learn more about how they use the Gulf of Mexico. By identifying the specific location of regularly used habitat, the results provide invaluable information for marine planning and management for this species, whose populations in the Gulf of Mexico are well below historic levels and in recent years have continued to decline drastically in some areas.

The maritime feeding grounds also hold the first clues about how loggerhead sea turtles spend time at sea -- which is, in essence, most of their lives.

"Up until now, management actions that affect loggerheads have often focused on their limited time at nesting beaches, or on fisheries regulations," said Kristen Hart, Ph.D., the U.S. Geological Survey research ecologist who led the synthesis. "Our findings open up important new options for marine habitat conservation, and provide valuable geographic data that can be used to strategically locate marine reserves based on the best available science, as called for in the new National Ocean Policy."

"The use of satellite tags for tracking marine animals has opened our eyes to the secret lives of some of nature's most elusive creatures," said USGS director Marcia McNutt, "At first a scientific tool to understand the life cycle of animals, such as white sharks and leatherback turtles, who rarely come into contact with humans, these tags may now be the main hope for understanding what we can do, or what we should stop doing, in order to bring them back from the road to extinction."

Researchers intercepted female loggerheads after their nesting forays to beaches and outfitted them with satellite tags at study sites in the Florida Panhandle, Casey Key in southwest Florida, and Dry Tortugas National Park. They then tracked the females' migrations and used a new method to determine precisely when they had arrived at "hotspot" foraging areas, in two geographically different locations.

Seven female turtles migrated to foraging sites off Southwest Florida, while the other three took up residence at foraging sites at the Yucatan site. Once the researchers applied the new method for synthesizing their satellite-tracking data, it became clear that these loggerhead turtles from all three populations consistently converged around two common sites. This confirmed a hunch that the researchers had developed after years of tracking turtles.

At both of the feeding hotspots, turtles selected individual sites where they foraged in shallow or nearshore waters less than fifty meters deep. Turtles appeared to prefer their own distinct territories, where they tended to remain resident. This suggests that it may be possible to accurately predict where sea turtles will feed, information that will prove vital for managers looking to focus conservation efforts on prime foraging habitat.

Researchers don't yet know what attracts loggerheads from around the Gulf to these specific feeding areas, although generally, loggerheads forage on the bottom of the sea floor for crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, clams or conchs.

"The logical next step is to investigate what makes these particular sites 'prime' foraging grounds by mapping and sampling the habitat types found on the sea floor," explained Hart. "It would also be useful to tag loggerheads at these foraging sites to confirm how long they reside in these areas, or alternatively to see where they go next."

Doris Gallan: Planning The Ultimate Travel Experience For Post 50s

The number one need I keep hearing about is the quest for unique and authentic experiences--this is why we travel. We Boomers are at an age where we value experience over objects either because we own more things than we ever thought we'd have or we realize we're not getting the warm and fuzzies from them that we'd hoped for. In our quest for great experiences, we travel further and to more exotic locations and we look to organizations that will tailor trips to our interests such as cooking, wine tasting, the arts, bike riding, sports (participating or watching), volunteering, and tons of other activities.

Union benefits teachers

I'm responding to a recent letter titled "Not all teachers alike." As both a teacher and a member of the Volusia Teachers Organization, I fully support any individual's right to choose to join or not join a union.

While it saddens me that the writer feels "almost ashamed to be a teacher" because VTO is so outspoken, I also find it ironic that employees who opt out of joining a union are more than willing to accept the benefits fought for and won by that very same union.

I wonder how many people who don't belong to VTO because they disagree with its message will turn down the next raise we negotiate? I doubt any will, and maybe that is something to feel "almost ashamed" about.
