Sun, 30 Sep 2012 19:56:25 -0700 Future French President: ?Anti-White Racism Spreading Through France? http://tsykydava.posterous.com/future-french-president-anti-white-racism-spr http://tsykydava.posterous.com/future-french-president-anti-white-racism-spr

Here we go.

Jean-Fran?ois Cop?, the man who wants to succeed ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy at the head of France?s main right-wing party has caused a furore with a claim that ?anti-white racism? is spreading through the country?s towns and cities.

?An ?anti-white racism? is developing in neighbourhoods of our towns where individuals ? some of whom have French nationality ? express contempt for French people, calling them ?Gaulois?, on the basis that they are not of the same religion, the same skin colour or the same origins as them,? he writes.

Claiming that he is ?breaking a taboo?, Cop? adds that ?this racism is as unacceptable as every other form of racism ? we must denounce it as we condemn all other forms of discrimination?.

?Cop? can?t make his mind up whether to be the spitting image of Sarkozy or the parrot of Marine Le Pen,? tweeted the newly appointed leader of the Socialist Party, Harlem D?sir, who started his political career at the head of the anti-racism campaign SOS-racisme.

Who?s Harlem D?sir? Well he?s as French as burning cars and hip-hop. Also he served 18 months in prison for fraud related to an immigrants rights group he was with.

?The ?anti-white racism? is manifested according to Cop? ?by the fact that there are areas where it is not good to be a woman, be white? some of our countrymen to flee the area where they live because they understand that they are not at home, it is unbearable,? he said.

Here is a more complete quote from the book.

Since this woman that feels like a stranger in this neighborhood where she lived for many years. An ?anti-White? attitude develops in the neighborhoods of our cities where individuals ? some of whom have French nationality ? despise the French called ?Gauls?, on the pretext that they do not have the same religion, the same skin color or the same origins as themselves.

I hear more and more people complain of Meaux and this racism is as unacceptable as any other form of racism and we must denounce it as we condemn all other discrimination. I know I broke a taboo by using the term ?anti-white? but I do deliberately, because it is the truth that some of our citizens live this way and silence exacerbates the trauma.

These phenomena are impossible to see from Paris, in the media and political spheres where the vast majority of officers are French of white skin born of French parents. In these microcosms, the lack of diversity limits the presence of people of color or of foreign origin. But let?s face it: the situation is reversed in many parts of our suburbs.

Sun, 30 Sep 2012 18:04:25 -0700 Chile's Allende wins Danish literature prize http://tsykydava.posterous.com/chiles-allende-wins-danish-literature-prize http://tsykydava.posterous.com/chiles-allende-wins-danish-literature-prize

(AP) ? Chilean author Isabel Allende has won a Danish literature prize for her "magical and spellbinding storytelling."

The 500,000 kroner ($86,000) Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize is given to a writer whose works compare with those of the legendary Andersen, who was born in 1805 and wrote about 160 fairytales and poems before his death in 1875.

More than 57 million copies of Allende's books, which incorporate elements of magic and fantasy, have been sold worldwide, most notably "The House of the Spirits," which catapulted her to fame when it was published in 1982.

Prize organizers praised Allende's "mixture of various ages, cultures, forms of knowledge and myths" that have given her storytelling "wingspan and height."

Previous award recipients include Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho and "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling.

Sat, 29 Sep 2012 21:32:35 -0700 NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games http://tsykydava.posterous.com/nfl-refs-approve-deal-ready-for-sunday-games http://tsykydava.posterous.com/nfl-refs-approve-deal-ready-for-sunday-games

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- NFL referees are ready to go unnoticed again, just as they prefer.

The refs approved a new eight-year contract with the league by a 112-5 vote Saturday, officially ending a lockout that led to three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew the attention of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

After a few hours of final preparations with league officials, the next stop for the referees will be the airport. Most will be heading straight to their Sunday game sites.

''It was pretty much 'Come on it and vote,''' said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. ''We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games.''

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place. Before long, they expect to go back to being mostly anonymous and sometimes hated. They're OK with both.

''The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,''' Green said. ''That's how we like to work.''

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

''We are obviously pleased to hear it,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night. Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

''I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned,'' Green said. ''If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well.''

Sat, 29 Sep 2012 19:39:20 -0700 3 Reasons Weight Loss Is Hard : Diet women. | How Can You Lose ... http://tsykydava.posterous.com/3-reasons-weight-loss-is-hard-diet-women-how http://tsykydava.posterous.com/3-reasons-weight-loss-is-hard-diet-women-how

?

Health fitness and weight Loss. why are they so Hard to achieve?

We all know the drill eat less, exercise more and you lose weight. Except you don?t. And while you are starving yourself and running yourself ragged and feeling the pain and exhaustion All you get for all that effort is hunger and fatigue. You may lose a few pounds for a short time, mainly you lose health, energy and the will to keep on. So why is weight loss so hard? There are six Reasons that I know of for this. Today we are talking about the 3 main ones and the first one is:

1. Over emphasis on the least important goals. Health is more than just not being sick. fitness is more than being able to do a step class without collapsing. Both health and fitness are more than just tools used to spur on weight loss. Energy, vibrancy, loving life, strength, flexibility and stamina are more important than a number on the scale. We are told to exercise in order to lost weight, and occasionally to look better but not because it is essential to vibrant health.

You are told to exercise to lose more weight. Not to be stronger, Not for more energy, not to increase mobility, not for flexibility not for any of those life enhancing, longevity increasing benefits. Just to help you to lose weight. The goal of exercise is usually just weight loss, not fitness. There is a logic to this. Muscles burn more fat, so if you build muscles so you can burn more fat, and lose more weight. Losing weight on its own is not very compelling. You need a benefit that is worth all that effort. How about, you will feel better, have fun, be able to do things again. The exercises you are told to do are long, tedious and boring, and tiring. No wonder we have trouble exercising regularly. If you are going to succeed at something at anything, your reason for doing it has to provide more pleasure and less pain than not doing it. A step class may do it for some, especially if you have an entertaining instructor. But for most people, the gym is not as appealing as the neighbourhood bakery.

You are told to eat salads because they are low calorie and will help you lose weight. Seldom are you told to eat them because they add nutrition, because they boost the immune system, because they clear out toxins, or even that the right foods can increase your energy. No. You are told to eat foods that will help you lose weight. This is the same problem. There is no pleasure in feeling hungry all the time. So do you really think you will be able to push aside the pleasure of food and starve yourself for days, weeks even months at a time, just so those numbers on the scale will go down.

Don?t get me wrong. I am all for losing excess weight. It is a real health issue. I am currently overweight. And I am trying to lose 15 pounds (was 18, making progress)? But it is not the only issue. It is not even the most important issue.

One of my personal goals, as I just said is to lose 15 pounds. It?s a number on a scale. But that is not the main goal. It is not compelling enough. Not even close.

I want to be able to climb stairs without being short of breath, carrying in the groceries 4 bags at a time instead of just 2, to be able to bend over and look under the counter if I drop something and not having to ask a younger member of the household to do it for me. To take the dogs for a run. Push the grandkids on the swing, catch them on the slide and race them to the merry-go-round without feeling like a wrung out dishrag. When weight loss becomes the main issue, you don?t solve these problems. In fact you make them worse.

How can weight loss make things worse? I have seen them all over. In the grocery store, on the street, at the mall. The thin fatties. They are not big. They are not obese. What they are, is visibly weak, and fragile. Their skin is not filled out with healthy toned muscle. It is loose and sagging. Their bodies are limp, almost shapeless. How does this happen? They have lost weight by way of whatever trick worked for them (starvation diets, fad diets, even over exercise) without any thought to their overall health and well being. Doing whatever it takes to lose the weight. That is the mantra: lose the weight lose the weight. Health strength and vibrancy need to be the main goals. If I can achieve that then weight loss will happen as a bi-product.

Being Fat is a common result of being unhealthy. The result, not the cause. Those thin fatties are noticeably unhealthy because of their fat. If you could round them up and measure their body fat percentage you may be surprised. In their efforts to lose weight at any cost have they lost muscle? Yes! You can see it. Bone? Have they lost bone? Most likely. Osteoporosis rates are rising too, not just obesity rates. Have they lost water? Absolutely. Have they lost fat? again absolutely, BUT in terms of percentages, probably less of a percentage of fat than the water, muscle and bone. Make health and fitness the number 1 goal, and you can lose fat without these problems.

2. We are given the wrong information. Have you ever heard that you need to eat low fat, low calorie foods. Have 5 to 10 servings of fruit and veggies and 5 servings of grain. This is about half right. I remember my friends at work acting like martyrs while eating their rice cakes. Rice cakes, tasteless pieces of eatable cardboard. It gave them no pleasure, no nutrients, did not satisfy their hunger but they ate them because they were low calorie. They may have been low calorie, but they were equally as low in nutrition. And because they were high on the glycemic index, most likely they caused a spike in blood sugar followed by the crash and they were hungrier than they were before they had that snack. All that sacrifice for nothing ! Calories are important, but not important enough to bother counting. If you have to count something. Count nutrients. Eat more nutritious food today than you did yesterday. You can find high nutrition foods that taste good. Experiment. Broccoli is a great food from a nutritional stand point. My husband loves steamed broccoli. I do not like it. but I have discovered that I do like it raw. I have tried cauliflower half a dozen different ways. I did not like any of them. So I don?t eat it. There are so many good foods in the world there is no reason to eat anything that does not give you pleasure. Don?t be afraid to experiment. Try them raw, steamed, stir fired, or roasted or in a soup or in a smoothie. Try them with spices, without spices. Keep trying new things until you find a dozen veggies you like. Then always have them on hand. Fruits make a great snack, much better than rice cakes. Now here is the biggest thing. Grains.

4 to 5 servings of whole grains will keep you fat. Many people cannot tolerate grain especially wheat, rye and barley. That is why you see so many products labeled ?gluten free?. Even if you do not have a sensitivity to gluten (the protein in wheat, rye and barley) grains put on the weight. This was really brought home to me when, at a restaurant, they had a little sign explaining how the cows they used were organically raised, hormone free and finished with grain for a full 2 weeks before slaughter. Those 2 weeks is what gave their meat a nice fat marbling. It was a great sales pitch for their steaks but I was struck by the time line. 2 weeks of grain, just 2 weeks made their cattle fat. It makes you and I fat too. This is more true for some people than for others and may change within an individual as they age. There was a time when bread did not make me fat. That changed in my mid thirties. I didn?t figure it out until recently. If you have trouble with weight gain, stop eating grains. while you are at it cut out sugars too. Now just so we are clear, by ?grains? I do not just mean your morning oatmeal. It is anything made with or from wheat, oats, rice, corn, barley and rye. Quinoa is okay, it is not really a grain, it is more like a grain substitute. Lots of nutrition, but fewer of the problems.

Flour can be ground from any of these grains but wheat is what most flour is made from. So that means cut back on bread, cakes, cookies, breaded meats (no chicken nuggets). and Stop worrying about fat in your food. Yes a gram of fat has more calories than a gram or anything else. but it also does not cause a spike in your insulin, so it is less likely to be stored as fat and it triggers that part of the brain that controls hunger. You will eat less of everything if you include natural-not man made-fats in your meal. So the fat has more calories per ounce, but you will have less calories per meal once you body adapts to your new eating pattern. Fats are not the bad guy. I am amazed at how many people, trying to lose weight will have dry toast for breakfast, even though they don?t like it, because they think it will help them lose weight. It is the bread that they are still eating that puts the weight on, not the butter that they have given up. Oh, and I have to say if you are going to throw away part of your egg, stop with the shell. Egg yolks are truly a super food. An entire chick can be grown from the nutrition in just one yolk. It has to have just about everything a body can need.

We are also given wrong information about exercise. Hours of aerobics just make you tired. Yes you need to add movement and exercise to your day. It just doesn?t have to be long hours in a gym, Walk to the store, or to work if you can. If that is not possible, park as far from the door as you feel you can comfortably manage. Take the stairs instead of the elevator if you can. Learn some stretches. Take a walk. Breathe. How many people went to the gym a hundred years ago. There were a few. But not many. They moved more all throughout the day. We need to add movement to our day. Most important short sprints do as much, maybe more for you than long duration exercises.

Sprints build you up, are easier to do, less abusive to your joints. Long duration exercises wear you down.

3. We may fear being thin. I am talking about a deep down feeling. One you may not be aware of. It?s hard to fight something you don?t even know is there. So take a moment and think. Is there some way being fat serves you? Maybe you need some examples. There are many reasons why you may want to stay fat. Eating comfort food can be a stress reliever, enough so that deep down you do not want to give it up. It is too big a price to pay for the benefits you believe you will gain. Fat can be a wall of protection. If you are feeling vulnerable could this be true for you. Fat can make you feel safe. I had, actually still have, this problem. When my first husband became ill, the first and only obvious symptom was weight loss. As he lost, I gained. You don?t need to be a therapist to figure that one out. Being thin feels dangerous. Even though I am now aware of this irrational feeling it is still there. When I get on the scale and see it has moved down a little I am happy of course; but happy is the 2nd feeling. Even now the first reaction is of unease, fear. If the way you think about yourself, and/or your weight is only a minor obstacle, and if you are able to identify it, you can deal with it. If it is more major, or if you suspect there is something but are not quite sure, you may need help. The way I am dealing with it is through visualization. I am visualizing myself thinner but in a context where I am also strong, healthy, happy, and active. I am also trying out a technique called EFT or tapping. (that may be the subject of another blog post). Thinner has to start to feel safe. Notice, thinner, not thin. I will be happy at just not being obese. Maybe when I get there, I will be able to go a little further. I don?t know. I have picked a goal, a goal that should be a healthy weight, not a thin weight. It is a weight that is right for me. I am trying to be healthy. It is not necessary to fit into anyone else?s image of who I should be or what I should look like.

I am working on this. Wish me luck. If you working on improving your health too, I also wish you luck. I would like to hear about your challenges, successes and failures. Please visit my website and leave a comment. http://www.InShapeAfter50.com

Sat, 29 Sep 2012 17:48:54 -0700 5 Reasons Why 2012 is a Good Time to Buy a Franchise http://tsykydava.posterous.com/5-reasons-why-2012-is-a-good-time-to-buy-a-fr http://tsykydava.posterous.com/5-reasons-why-2012-is-a-good-time-to-buy-a-fr

Haven?t you at least at one point of your life dreamt about starting your own business, being your own boss, and building up your utterly successful company from scratch? In fact, most business orientated people play with the idea of buying into a franchise. Franchises offer an ideal business model as you work for yourself, BUT not by yourself!

Buying into a recognized brand will give your business a head start. So you can skip the difficult and lengthy time of building up a trusted brand and jump straight into the lucrative franchise business. Obviously, starting up your own business sounds really attractive and exciting, but experienced entrepreneurs know just too well how hard it can be to run a business without a supporting network. However, don?t take it too easy on running a franchise as it still requires a great deal of business acumen, patience and determination. The bright side is though that you?re are being part of something bigger, and often, better.

Hence, why is 2012 the best time to buy a franchise? Here are 5 powerful reasons:

1. It?s a Buyer?s Market

Franchisors will do anything to keep their business competitive for customers and hitting the growth targets. Therefore, they will make the franchising opportunity as affordable and attractive as it can be, in order to get people involved. Some reduce the initial cost of purchase, or offer specific on going incentives, such as refunds on the first year?s advertising/ reduction in operating cost and fees. And as you read the title before ? the franchise market is and will be a buyer?s market.

2. Personal Future

The economy is currently on the rise again, but people still moan and complain about their job insecurity.? As you can see though, this factor is very important at all levels of the career ladder. However you will also see that many mid-level managers will struggle to keep their position in the long term as the competition is really high.

So if you have the actual ?guts? and skills required, why don?t you focus on securing your on future and creating your own job security. Many people use their redundancy money or team up with ex-colleagues to buy a franchise. Hence, what better way to choose a business partner than by picking somebody you have worked with? BUT watch out ? just people you can entirely trust and work with, because you don?t want to get into stupid misunderstandings or disputes mid-way.

3. Properties on Sale

You might have experienced or seen the huge problems with open properties. Several years ago landlords never struggled to fill the properties, but the last few years have been hard for them.? Empty places, which results automatically in low or no return of investment at all. Hence, commercial property owners are much easier to negotiate and willing to take on lower paying tenants. In the end it is a buyer?s market and franchise owners have the best pick of the bunch, when it comes to choosing a business premises.

4. Raising funds much easier

The government is focused on boosting the economy and creating jobs by encouraging banks to provide funding for the people, who are willing to ?make a move? and help start rolling the economy. Moreover, franchising is widely considered to be the safer option than starting a business from scratch as for instance the bank will be by far easier to offer a loan to you.

Certainly you will be expected to have a slight understanding of your industry and market, but banks will be far happier to support you with a loan for a trusted or well-known franchise than a new brand / business concept.

5. Huge pool of talents

Recession has hit hard on the job sector the last few years and this was one of the reasons why highly qualified employees had to be fired during this period. However, there is a great pool of talents out there, who want to get back to work as soon as possible. This will result in a decrease of cost and time on managing recruitment campaigns for you. Moreover, it will be easier for you to find the right people for the right job.

A husband and wife duo captured the husband/wife title at the inaugural National Family Tennis Championship, held at the Waldorf Astoria in Naples Sept. 6-9.

There were five divisions of play: father/son, mother/son, mother/daughter, father/daughter, and husband/wife. David King and Kim Cashman of Clearwater were the husband/wife champs.

They play out of the Henry L. McMullen Tennis Complex, and in the final, they defeated Ben Goodman and Caroline Clark of Birmingham, Ala., 7-5, 6-4.

After participating in local competitions at tennis facilities in eight states, 18 teams earned an invitation to the national championships, which included three nights of hotel accommodations at the hotel. After an opening reception, the teams took to the courts in a round-robin tournament to determine a champion in the five divisions of play.

Fri, 28 Sep 2012 21:18:00 -0700 Cisco Blog ? Blog Archive ? U.S. Broadband Deployment: Where ... http://tsykydava.posterous.com/cisco-blog-blog-archive-us-broadband-deployme http://tsykydava.posterous.com/cisco-blog-blog-archive-us-broadband-deployme

By Howard Baldwin, Contributing Columnist

At a time in the United States when political opinions seem to fly to the extremes, with no middle ground, it?s no surprise that the FCC?s recent report on broadband deployment evokes a similarly polarized reaction.

Of the five commissioners who authored the report, three (including chairman Julius Genachowski) seem to believe that 95% penetration of fixed broadband by any technology (see graphic) is cause for alarm, citing the lack of broadband in rural areas and tribal lands. Two of the three commissioners filed dissents to the conclusions of the report.

Larry Downes, an Internet consultant writing in Forbes, called this conclusion ?bizarre? and accused the FCC of an incipient power grab:

?Under section 706 of the 1996 Communications Act, the FCC must make an annual determination of whether broadband ?is being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion.? If not, the agency must take ?immediate action? to remove barriers that are keeping network operators from spending their investors? money even faster. Which translates, on the majority?s view, into a vast array of regulatory powers that otherwise aren?t available to the agency.?

According to Troy Wolverton, writing in the San Jose Mercury-News from the heart of Silicon Valley, industry lobbying group Broadband for America called the report ?inaccurate? and focused ?too much on those who lack broadband and not enough on the investments made by broadband providers to improve access and speeds.?

The FCC did acknowledge the private sector?s $1 trillion investment in broadband deployment. ?The private sector continues to do its part,? Wolverton quoted Broadband for America co-chairman John Sununu saying. ?Rather than misrepresent this record, our government should be working with us to identify the best approach to reach the small percentage of rural homes without broadband access.?

Or should it? Is there a third element missing from the FCC report, beyond rural vs. urban? I submit that there is, and that missing element is context. It?s arguably encouraging having government officials admit, ?We can do better,? rather than hollowly touting success. But pointing out the lack of rural broadband, especially when the percentage is in the single digits, misses the bigger picture: where does the U.S. sit in comparison with the rest of the world?

It?s not surprising that nobody wants to talk about that, because among the top 25 countries, the U.S. is 23rd in broadband penetration ? and that?s down from 22nd place, according to research firm Point Topic. Only Cyprus and the Isle of Man trail the U.S., according to the latest figures from Q3 of last year.

Look at the graphic again, and note that fiber deployment is way down at 19 percent. The industry has done great at deploying broadband, but as the FCC report rightly notes, technology tends to move forward rapidly. This is one of those situations.

Instead of worrying about the lower 5 percent of Americans who don?t have broadband, why aren?t we worrying about the upper 5 percent of Americans who want to create new start-up companies but don?t have access to the super-fast broadband to do so?

If the FCC wants to make a power grab, why doesn?t it mandate fiber deployment where it will do the most good, rather than insisting that telecommunications companies eliminate demographic data from their determinations of where to deploy fiber?

Why not let ?broadband service providers deploy high-speed fiber in urban downtown areas, where companies will be mostly likely to happily pay a premium for it, and then use that income to backfill in other areas? And do that in radiating circles, from urban areas to suburban areas, and finally to rural areas.

If I had one message for the FCC, it would be to stop pitting urban versus rural, and start figuring out how to move the U.S. up the international ranks of broadband penetration.

Fri, 28 Sep 2012 19:22:24 -0700 Change the World Without Losing Yourself - Dan Pallotta - Harvard ... http://tsykydava.posterous.com/change-the-world-without-losing-yourself-dan http://tsykydava.posterous.com/change-the-world-without-losing-yourself-dan

A hundred years ago, people didn't talk about changing the world ? not in the way we speak of it today. In 1912, there weren't movements for the eradication of poverty or disease, or even an understanding of their scale. Then came Woodrow Wilson's dream of the League of Nations, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the formation of the United Nations. From there, Gandhi, the civil rights movement, and speeches by President and Robert Kennedy that declared, "We need men who dream of things that never were," and that spoke of "a new world society." There was Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, delivered at the age of 34, and Neil Armstrong walking on the surface of the moon at the age of 38. Their youth brought a feeling of youthfulness to humanity itself, and gave people the sense that nothing is impossible.

This moment in the long arc of history launched a change-the-world movement that never existed before, including change-the-world vocations on a major scale ? from the Peace Corps to an explosion in the growth of opportunities in the nonprofit sector, which employs more than 10 million people today. And in the last decade or so, the genre has become even more refined: social enterprise, social entrepreneurship, L3C low-profit corporations, B corporations, the charitable endurance event industry, and more. New infrastructures have arisen to support it, from the Stanford Social Innovation Review, TED and Good, to the Social Enterprise Program at Harvard. Most major universities now have nonprofit management programs that didn't exist ten years ago. And courses on philanthropy are now even taught at the undergraduate level at Tufts, Brown, Indiana University, and many other colleges.

With the growth of these structures and opportunities has come an emphasis on doing, often to the exclusion of being. The competition to be the one who changes the world can be as cut-throat, if not more, than the competition among fast-food chains, or cosmetics companies, or movie studios. Witness the recent war between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood. Or Komen's efforts to protect its brand by discouraging others from using the phrase "for the Cure," or AIDS activists' assaults on the AIDS Rides. Lost in this new era is the notion that one can still make a difference in business, even absent any corporate social responsibility program. How would the charities trying to change the world operate without the manufacturers that make the equipment for their medical clinics, or without General Electric providing them with light bulbs? How would a "social enterprise" like PlanetTran, the hybrid car service, operate without Toyota, who makes the Prius, which constitutes their fleet? And in the absence of industrial farmers and national grocery chains, we would find ourselves in need of a great deal more charity, and a lot further away from the goal of changing the world, to boot.

Paradoxically, this new era of limitlessness often serves to limit the imaginations of the young people it attracts. It can obscure their real and natural passions. If you want to change the world, you have to go into the change-the-world sector, the times say. And so a young girl, whose calling ? and whose value to the world ? may really be to dance, or to build an industry, is hypnotized into becoming the fundraising director for an NGO. Imagine if someone had held up Gandhi to a young Frank Lloyd Wright, as Gandhi is held up to our young people today, and the incredible architect decided to go run a nonprofit soup kitchen as a result. What a tragedy. And what a setback that would have been for architecture and design.

Individual economic futures are at risk, as well. While we may envision a new world, the donating public and nonprofit sector are still stuck philosophically in Puritan times, demanding that nonprofit employees work for sacrificial wages, as a sign that their hearts are in the right place. And in another paradox, they ask the people who would dream a new dream for the world to abandon the economic dreams they have for themselves.

These are complicated times for making a true difference. Perhaps much more than they were for Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Henry Ford. So, what difference does being (as opposed to doing) make? Presence? Listening? What difference does passion make? Peace of mind? A slow pace? Excellence? What difference does industry make, when it creates new products and jobs that make life better for others? All of these things exist independent of the change-the-world sector. And, the change-the-world industry itself cannot possibly change the world if forced to play by a set of Puritan economic rules than fundamentally work against it ? low wages, no charity stock market, disdain for advertising and marketing, and the expectation of immediate results.

I get e-mails all the time from people who are grappling with these issues ? many from students wondering whether they should go into the for-profit sector or the nonprofit sector, or asking how they can reconcile their dreams of a better world with the economic dreams they have for themselves. Others are from corporate executives feeling a dearth of purpose, and asking for career advice. Still others are from nonprofit leaders frustrated by a system that works against the dreams that brought them into the sector in the first place. People are suffering from a crisis of meaning, and not in small part because the definitions of meaning have been re-engineered by a culture confused about it itself. The feedback I get has inspired me to delve more deeply into these issues as part of the work that my company does with a specific curriculum called Change Course, which explores the intersection of money and meaning.

Somehow the dream of changing the world ended up changing the quality of our dreams. It's not natural. When this era of profound human potential combines with authentic human passions, unlimited by artificial categories and boxes, then the world can really change, into something including ? but far more profound than ? the world without human suffering we have begun to imagine.

POSTED: 05:14 a.m. HST, Sep 06, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO >> San Francisco police and prosecutors are warning the city?s Chinese community to be aware of scam artists who have made off with almost $2 million this year by playing on the superstitions of older, Cantonese-speaking women.

The most recent cases happened over the Labor Day weekend, when two women in their 60s were told they and their cash and jewelry needed to be purified because they had stepped in blood and were being overtaken by evil spirits, Police Capt. Garret Tom said.

The victims ? one of whom was approached in Chinatown on Sunday, the other waylaid in the South of Market neighborhood on Monday ? turned over their valuables for a blessing. But the thieves, also women, made off with them by distracting their targets, according to a surveillance tape the police department released.

?They?re very comfortable with what they do because they?re very good with what they do,? said Lt. Arthur Stellini of the San Francisco Police Department?s special victims unit. ?They train at this, they practice at this. They hone their skills just like anybody else.?

The bag of loot taken from one of the unsuspecting prey was worth $35,000. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made.

In May, prosecutors announced the arrests of three women they say stole more than $100,000 worth of cash and jewelry from elderly women they approached on the streets with a similar scam.

Huifei Lin, 42, Caiqiong Chen, 43, ?Lirong Lin, 57, were arrested as they tried to board an airplane to Hong Kong and are facing multiple counts, including grand theft and extortion.

Police Chief Greg Suhr said unsuspecting Chinese women in other major cities, including Boston, New York, Las Vegas and Seattle, have been swindled in the same way.

?Apparently, this is something that is effective,? he said.

District Attorney George Gascon said he planned to convene community meetings to warn San Francisco residents about the con.

Easychord encourages us to listen closely to the slowly swirling eddies he stirs up, to understand what we hear, our own private interpretation of the aural data obtained.

[Release page] Textured abstraction like Easychord?s can be a porthole. Layers as delicately stacked as these are penetrable. As with certain abstract paintings, if you stare at it long enough, if you let yourself become swept up in Easychord?s gently shimmering ambient, you will see. This Italian artist?s media are mixed electronic and acoustic?synthesizers and piano, guitar too perhaps?all looped and stratified, a new wave overlapping the last one as it ebbs and recedes, blue and green, no glaring colours to draw attention to any particular detail.

In the seventies, critic John Berger explained abstract art ?as if the painting?absolutely still, soundless? becomes a corridor, connecting the moment it represents with the moment at which you are looking at it,? because it transcends the precise moment in the world, capturing its persisting essence. Think of Not in My Family Tree like this, as ?absolutely sound, formless? and how it can offer privileged access to reality betraying the moment for the longer now. Persistent essence is another way of saying, it stands the test of time.

Easychord encourages us to listen closely to the slowly swirling eddies he stirs up, to understand what we hear, our own private interpretation of the aural data obtained. Although I hear melody here and there and at times, it evokes certain moods or specific things, I imagine you would hear something else altogether, as would the next listener and the next.

The disc is beautifully housed deep at the bottom of a 21 x 13 cm glossy black paperboard envelope with a print mounted on the front.

Not in My Family Tree is available on Heart and Soul. [Release page]

Sat, 11 Feb 2012 20:10:54 -0800 'HTC Endeavor' quad-core phone reportedly on the way http://tsykydava.posterous.com/htc-endeavor-quad-core-phone-reportedly-on-th http://tsykydava.posterous.com/htc-endeavor-quad-core-phone-reportedly-on-th

Android Central

HTC may be about to make smartphone history with the world's first quad-core handset, if the latest reports from veteran phone blog MoDaCo are to be believed.

According to MoDaCo's source, the manufacturer will soon unveil the HTC Endeavor, and it'll be powered by a beastly quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. Other reported specs include 1GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch, 720p display, an 8MP main camera and 1.3MP front-facer.  Connectivity-wise, Wifi a/b/g/n support is reported, along with Bluetooth 4.0. A quad-band (not penta-band) HSPA+ radio is apparently in the bag too, which suggests this device may be AT&T-bound in the US.

On the software side, the phone is said to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4.0, just like the couple of leaked devices we’ve already seen.

The Endeavor, which seems to have started life with the codename “Edge”, has been the subject of numerous leaks since late last year. Recent reports have suggested that “Endeavor” is actually a codename, and that the device will be branded as the HTC Supreme. Given the differences in the spelling of “Endeavor” (or Endeavour, if you prefer) around the world, our money would be on “Supreme” being the final name.

It’s likely we’ll see more of HTC’s quad-core monster in a couple of weeks at MWC. We’ll be there, of course, to bring you all the announcements as they happen!

Sat, 11 Feb 2012 02:27:24 -0800 High Quality Lawn Mower Parts In Dallas | Send A Photo Card http://tsykydava.posterous.com/high-quality-lawn-mower-parts-in-dallas-send http://tsykydava.posterous.com/high-quality-lawn-mower-parts-in-dallas-send

Hired mowing services are never that necessary for ordinary households. Homeowners can just spare some hours or simply integrate this to their exercise routine. Mowing is, perhaps, not a tiring task especially if people only need to trim the bushes around the backyard. They may even grab their in ear headphones for some good music while doing the job. Inasmuch as these are important tools in the house, it is vital that this should be kept at optimum shape. And when new lawn mower parts Dallas are needed, people should only get them at the certified stores.

Replacements are pretty expensive. It is truly not wise for anyone to purchase anything without carefully and comprehensively investigating the origin of the problem. Technician should, therefore, be hired to work for it. Yet, adroit people with good flairs on mechanical components may troubleshoot it right away.

However, significant repair works can be too much for a commoner. And the only way to scrimp on the project to find reasonable spare part. Yet, of course, people are encouraged not to get modestly priced items of no name.

Brandless merchandises are illogical choices. Quality must come first before scrimping and saving. It may be the a buyer can scrimp at the first glance, but does not mean that he or she can always be guaranteed with a top quality product to take back home.

Any mechanical part is potentially costly. Coupled with its costly installation, out of pocket expenses are likely be far from what has been scrimped on.

To ensure that the items sold have, indeed, met standards, people may check the company?s BBB accreditation first. Accredited establishments are expected to run their businesses in ethical manner selling nothing the best, expensive or not.

High quality lawn mower parts Dallas are never hard to purchase with a profound knowledge about the unit, as well as the part a person is getting. lawn mower parts dallas

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 02:17:56 -0800 Chris Weigant: Contraceptive Debate Reporting Omits Important ... http://tsykydava.posterous.com/chris-weigant-contraceptive-debate-reporting http://tsykydava.posterous.com/chris-weigant-contraceptive-debate-reporting

The Obama administration recently ruled that churches and other religious organizations who provide health insurance to their workers at their non-church businesses must include free birth control, as indeed all health insurance plans are now required to do. This decision does not affect the churches themselves, but instead such satellite operations as hospitals and universities. The churches still have a "conscience clause" which allows them to choose not to provide contraceptives to church or other religious employees, and the new federal rule mirrors laws already on the books in 28 states. Even so, the new policy has engendered a huge debate from the pulpit, from politicians, and from the media. The real glaring omission from the media reports, however, is the lack of the voices of women who work for religious hospitals and universities -- in other words, those directly affected by the new rule.

Pro and con, the people I see being interviewed and otherwise weighing in on the debate are not the ones directly affected by it. I have no idea why this gaping hole in what should be a basic journalistic assignment exists, personally. As I've been watching the debate rage, I see a lot of older men debating women's sexual morals. I see a lot of celibate priests and bishops being interviewed. I see old, male lawmakers weighing in. To be fair, I also see a lot of women being interviewed, usually from either a pro or con advocacy group. I've even seen some doctors and health policy officials of both sexes offering up scientific reason and logical advice.

You know what I have yet to see either on television or in print? A poll of the workers affected. Maybe that's too tough a thing to ask for -- polls are time-consuming, after all, and the debate hasn't been raging all that long. But I have also yet to see in the media even a single woman interviewed who actually works for a religious hospital or university. Not a single "woman on the street" interview, not a single union representative who speaks for these women, not a single spokesperson for the women themselves. Not one. No nurses, no janitors, no administrators, no security guards... nothing.

American journalism has failed to answer a very basic question in this debate: what do those actually affected by this decision think about it? This is preposterous and shameful. Lefty media who support the Obama administration's decision (at least, the ones that I've seen) are no exception -- they haven't bothered to get out and question the people affected, either.

We hear from religious experts, morality experts, women's rights advocates, contraception advocates, legislators, politicians on the campaign trail, doctors, health insurance experts, and even sex experts -- all their voices are deemed valid and important to the debate. But, apparently, the affected women are simply somehow not valid or important to the debate, because nobody in the mainstream media has bothered to even make the attempt to find out what they think about the decision.

What can be done about this, other than griping about it in a blog post? I'm not entirely sure. Writing, emailing, and/or calling up your favorite media outlet and asking why they haven't bothered to find out and report this important information -- which is not just relevant but actually key to the debate -- might be a start. Feel free to forward this column to them, maybe it'll light a fire under some intrepid editor somewhere. It's certainly worth a try.

If the media were doing the job they're supposed to be doing, we would have those quotes and statistics by now. The fact that we don't speaks volumes about how the average person's voice can be completely drowned out in the public infotainment shouting match which passes for our political arena today.

It's really not all that hard to do. Send a reporter down to a university or hospital which would be affected. Station the reporter on a public sidewalk outside the organization, and randomly start asking people exiting the institution a few questions: "Excuse me, Ma'am, do you work for [organization name]? Can I ask you your opinion on whether you agree with the decision to provide you with health insurance which fully covers birth control, or whether you think such coverage should not be provided because [organization name] is run by [church name] who has religious beliefs that such coverage not be provided?"

It's called "journalism," and it ain't rocket science.
